Nov. 14, 2022 – JH Bruns wins 2nd Buckeye Bowl

The Buckeyes finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record and fell short of the playoff round. This was a significant disappointment but does not take away from the great success of the tournament itself. Thank you to all the parent volunteers and coaches that made the event such a success!

Oct. 2, 2022 – Roster Set

After a busy week of four exhibition games in four days, the coaches had some tough decisions to make to get the roster down to 18 individuals. The boys finished with an impressive 3-0 win over Lord Selkirk after close losses to River East, Vincent Massey, and the Royals in the prequel on Monday.

This year’s teams features 11 returning veterans and is heavily composed of grade 12 seniors. The new additions will be key pieces as the Buckeyes vie for the A division crown once again this season.

Feb. 12, 2022 – Buckeyes drop game 3 to Kodiaks

It was a disappointing first round exit for Miles Mac at the hands of neighbourhood rivals the REC Kodiaks. The Buckeyes took game 1 on home ice but dropped game 2 on the road at Gateway and just never seemed to find their game in the final match despite valiantly battling back from an early 3-0 hole. The Kodiaks played hard and fast and were deserving of the series win.

The Buckeyes showed well all year in the top tier of the WHSHL and have a lot to be proud of for the season. The boys will be back on the ice in March hosting a tournament to end the year.

Jan. 7, 2022 – WHSHL “On Pause”

Due to the period of remote learning in Manitoba from Jan. 10-14, the WHSHL season will be put on pause. Schedules have been updated and games will be rescheduled when play resumes.

Dec. 22, 2021 – Updates

The Buckeyes head into the winter break with 9 wins, 8 losses, and 2 OTL for a total of 27 points after 19 regular season games. Overall, the team is 12-11. Our game results and stats have been updated.

Today, the Province of MB extended the school holiday until Jan. 10, 2022 and the school division has put sports on hold until then. The boys will hit the ice for practice on Jan. 10 at Terry Sawchuk before taking on Westwood at Keith Bodley on the 12th. The hope is that we can host our Buckeye Bowl tournament as planned starting Jan. 13.

Schedules have been updated to reflect the changes.

Have a great break everyone!

Nov. 15, 2021 – Updates

The Buckeyes have a 5-4 record and 14 points in the bank just past the one third mark of the regular season. A recent four game win streak was snuffed out by a determined Oak Park squad on Nov. 12. Kyle Chapko sits first in league goal scoring and has 21 points in 15 total games. Overall, it’s a positive start for the squad in the top tier.

Miles Mac will host their first tournament in January – dubbed the “Buckeye Bowl”. It’s an eight team bracket featuring teams from the Platinum Promotions and Winnipeg Free Press Divisions of the WHSHL as well as the Zone 4 League. The scheduke can be found here.

Team pictures and bios should be up soon. Game results, schedules, and stats are updated regularly.

Oct. 11 2021 – Buckeyes Ready to Go!

The roster is set and pre-season games are complete and the Buckeyes are ready to compete in the Platinum Promotions A Division of the WHSHL this season. Over 40 students tried out for the squad and the final roster is primarily varsity aged and features some talent and depth, making the jump to the top division for the first time since 2017-2018 season possible. The boys scored three wins over River East (4-3), Kildonan East (5-1) and Powerview (4-3) before falling to Springfield (0-3) in the final of the annual preseason tourney in Oakbank. The team opens on the road vs. St. Paul’s on the 12th before returning for our home opener vs. Oak Park on Oct. 20. Full roster has been updated, with profiles to come. Stats will also be updated here.

Sept. 8 2021 – Tryout Registration

RETSD has approved tryouts/practices and inter-school competition. As a result, we will begin with tryouts starting on Sept. 15. To participate, parents and students are asked to read the instructions and complete the online registration found here.

Sept. 23 2020 – Buckeyes to take LOA from WHSHL due to Covid-19 Pandemic

Today the River East Transcona School Division announced the suspension of all extra curricular activities, including all sports, until at least the end of the first semester (January 2021). – See announcement. As a result, we regret to inform you that Miles Mac will not field a team for competition in the WHSHL for the 2020-2021 season. We understand the disappointment felt by prospective players and our hockey community. We will miss seeing you at the rink and the chance to participate in our wonderful league. We’ll be back.

Sept. 1 2020 – Hockey Update

As of today, Hockey Manitoba and the Manitoba High School Athletics Association have entered phase 2 of the “Return to Play” protocol for hockey. This allows for tryouts to happen if public health protocols and the regulations of the RTP are followed.

However, our program is also subject to the approval of school and divisional officials. For now, RETSD is prohibiting all extra curricular activities. This means that the Buckeye hockey program is currently on hold. If the status of extra curricular activities at RETSD changes, it is our intention to complete the necessary steps to field a team and compete in the WHSHL.

Students interested in playing hockey at Miles Mac are welcome to sign up and tryout for other programs as a back up plan. The hope is that a more definitive answer to the status of extra curriculars at RETSD will come before those tryouts conclude, allowing for a decision on whether to return to our program prior to rosters being finalized elsewhere.

– Mr. Fritzsche (Head Coach)

***Rookie Tournament Update – Event Cancelled***

Thank you to the boys that came out to the meeting on Thu. Mar. 12. Unfortunately the event will not occur this year due to the efforts to keep everyone safe during the global pandemic.

Looking forward to better times ahead – including our tryouts/training camp in September. If you want any information on the program – please contact Mr. Fritzsche at gfritzsche@retsd.mb.ca

Feb. 28 – Season Ends at Hands of CPET

After a hard fought series the Buckeyes fell in two straight to the CPET Canadiens, ending a wonderful season on a disappointing note. It was not from a lack of effort, but the boys ran into a team playing some solid hockey and they just fell short. News on awards and other year end activities will be forthcoming.

Feb. 23 – Buckeyes Advance to Quarter Finals

Miles Mac finished as the second seed in the WFP Division and faced off against the 15th ranked SJR Eagles. After dispatching of the Eagles by a score of 5-1 in game 1 the Buckeyes faced a stiffer challenge in game 2 at Dutton. Down 4-2 the Buckeyes rallied to win and sweep the series by a score of 4-2.

Miles will now face the CPET Canadiens in the Quarter Final Round. The teams split the season series with Miles Mac taking the latest matchup by a score of 3-2 earlier this month.

Game 1 – Tue. Feb. 25  4:30 PM at Gateway

Game 2 – Wed. Feb. 26  3:15 PM at East End

Game 3 – Fri. Feb. 28  3:45 PM at River East (if necessary)

Jan. 20 – Buckeyes Earn Silver in Music City

Miles Mac took on teams from across the United States in the Smokey Mountain Classic in Nashville. After an opening defeat against the local team, the team rallied with a string of victories to qualify for the tournament final. In a tight game, the Buckeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to Little Caesars Farmington Hills (Michigan). A disappointing final result but a well-earned silver medal for the squad. The boys, coaches, and parents had a great time in Tennessee with tons of memories made!

Jan. 6 – Happy New Year!

The team is ready for an action packed January. The Buckeyes look to get back on a winning streak and improve on their 9-6 record with three big league games before they depart for Music City – Nashville TN on Dec. 15.

Three Buckeyes were named to the WFP Division all-star team. Congrats to forwards Aaron Neilson, Nate Turner, and defenceman Tyson Fincaryk.

Training camp is over after several practices and seven exhibition games. The Buckeyes welcome nine new players who will join eleven returning veterans to form this year’s squad. The future is bright, with only six seniors on the roster, the Buckeyes will be young but enthusiastic as they vie for the school’s third Winnipeg Free Press Division (B) championship in the 36 team WHSHL. Click here for the player roster and here for a list of team’s staff. Bios will be added soon.

The WFP Division features 15 teams. The Buckeyes will renew some of their favourite rivalries. Miles Mac will face off against neighbourhood rival Kildonan East twice, with the first matchup coming on October 30 at Gateway. The girls squad will be facing River East at the same time on the opposite rink making for a fun day. 2017-2018 Season News Updates

Apr. 26, 2018-Buckeyes show well at Rookie Tournament

The grade 9s and 10s competing for the Buckeyes showed well at the annual Rookie Classic tournament.  The team went 2-1 in round robin play, defeating Beaver Brae 12-0 and coming back from a three goal deficit to knock of CJS 6-5 in OT.  The team struggled in a lopsided loss vs. Prairie Mountain which ended up costing the rookies a chance to move on to the quarter final based on tiebreakers.  The team also defeated West K 8-3 in Pre-tournament play, as well as matching up against an alumni squad.  The old guys took that one in a close game.  Kahl Dewar strapped on the pads for the first time and hung in there to give our boys a chance to have a team this season.  Thanks Kahl!
